Towards comprehensive cardiovascular health checks across Europe Brussels, Belgium

7 May 2026 | 09:30 - 11:30 CEST | Brussels, European Parliament

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in Europe, despite significant advances in treatment. Late diagnosis, inconsistent screening approaches, variability in care pathways, and gaps in preventive action continue to hinder progress.

On 16 December 2025, the European Commission published the EU Safe Hearts Plan, which included a flagship initiative for a Council Recommendation on Cardiovascular health checks.

Building on this momentum, the event aims to provide a platform for discussions between EU and national-level stakeholders on the current landscape for national health check programmes across the EU. The event will also promote dialogue between policymakers and scientific societies.

The event will be hosted by MEP Aurelijus Veryga (ECR, Lithuania), Member of the European Parliament’s Interest Group on Cardiovascular Health and moderated by Prof. Michal Vrablik, Professor of Internal Medicine at Charles University in Prague, the Czech Republic.
